The Cedarville psychology major applies the human-behavior research world to the needs & problems that people face on a daily basis. Human service and people-helping comprise a significant focus of the psychology major. The department has a strong track record both for placing students in desired jobs at the baccalaureate-level as well as seeing students find admission to graduate schools of their choices. Often the former students select a degree in applied psychology while the latter group of students select the more broad psychology major.

A hallmark of Cedarville’s psychology program is a commitment to teaching all concepts from a biblical perspective. In particular, the faculty desire for students to think biblically about psychology topics and to view psychology from a Christian world-and-life view. Biblical education, an introduction to the world of research, and a strong emphasis on classroom critical thinking help shape CU psychology majors to understand people & life from a biblical perspective.

Courses in psychology provide a background for a better understanding of the modern world, other academic fields, and one’s self. Classes can be taken as courses for a major or minor concentration in psychology, as supporting courses for other majors, or because of general interest.

The major concentration in psychology is designed to encourage an understanding of human behavior from a broad perspective, to prepare students for graduate study in psychology, for employment in a psychology-related field, or for further education or career training in a variety of other fields.

The Social Services Degree curriculum has a dual function. It prepares students for entry-level career positions in a variety of social service occupations and it provides the first two years of a course of study leading to a baccalaureate degree. The Capital Community College A.S. degree in Social Services articulates with the Central Connecticut State University Bachelor of Social Work and the Saint Joseph College B.A. Social Work program.

The curriculum prepares students for employment as mental health aides, group residence workers, neighborhood outreach workers, social casework assistants and other similar positions. In many instances, social service workers are employed under the supervision of a social worker, or in some cases a psychologist. Employment opportunities exist in such areas as day care, nursery school education, mental health, group and community work at the public and private levels.

The Clinical/counseling psychology minor is for individuals planning careers in psychology, social work, or counseling education and is open to majors and non-majors with the needed prerequisites. Students learn about the therapeutic services provided in counseling centers, independent or group practices, hospitals or clinics.

Individuals interested in advanced degrees in psychology have the opportunity to learn how to treat a variety of adjustment and mental health problems with various populations at the undergraduate level.

For students interested in applying psychology to athletics, the Psychology Department offers a sports psychology minor in collaboration with the Physical and Sports Education Department.

This minor focuses on how psychological factors affect behavior on sports and athletics and on how participation in these activities affects the athlete. Students study social perception, motivation, group dynamics, development of motor skills, leadership, aggression, and other topics essential to working with teams and individual athletes for careers in coaching, education, research/ teaching, or counseling.

The major program is designed for those who (1) wish to extend their education in the liberal arts with an emphasis on psychology, (2) plan to enter a profession or occupation in which a strong background in psychology is necessary, or (3) wish to prepare for graduate work in psychology.

With a BA in Psychology, graduates can qualify for positions requiring an understanding of human behavior in public service, education, or business. The undergraduate Behavior Analysis Certificate qualifies students for positions requiring the application of behavior analysis to children with developmental disabilities

The department offers a B.A. degree in Psychology. Students who major in Psychology may aspire to membership in Psi Chi, the national honor society in Psychology. In addition, there is an option for Elementary Education Majors who are earning their Special Education certification (“Teacher of Students With Disabilities Endorsement”) to also major in Psychology with an Early Childhood Specialization. When combined with elementary education, this option fulfills the Early Childhood Endorsement while allowing the student to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology. Students interested in this major should first meet with their advisor in Education to discuss the details of this option prior to declaring the second major in Psychology.
