The Clinical/counseling psychology minor is for individuals planning careers in psychology, social work, or counseling education and is open to majors and non-majors with the needed prerequisites. Students learn about the therapeutic services provided in counseling centers, independent or group practices, hospitals or clinics.

Professional psychologists work in laboratories, hospitals, government agencies and community organizations. But not all psychology majors become psychologists. Some Canisius psychology alumni are professors, therapists or case workers. Our extensive internship program enhances classroom learning and also gives students a sense of where their professional interest lie.

Psychology is a science that has as its central theme the study of behavior. Psychology involves studying how we interact with one another and our environment. Psychology is practical; it is concerned with improving our quality of life. To achieve these ends psychologists work in a broad range of research and applied settings. The psychology major is designed to provide each student with a comprehensive overview of the major fields of psychology and the methods used in psychological research. The major is also designed to assist the student in selecting elective courses which can form a concentration in an area of the student’s interest. These specialty areas might include clinical/community, social, developmental/child/aging, industrial/organizational, learning/cognitive, biopsychology/health psychology and legal psychology. The major provides a basis for careers in a variety of psychology related occupations such as mental health agencies, hospitals, schools, businesses and public organizations.

The Graduate School of Human Science has two master’s programs Clinical Psychology and Human Science. Students at this graduate school include those who have graduated from other universities, with academic emphasis placed on psychology, and those who have work experience at companies and other places in related fields. This graduate school provides students with chances to study specialized academic areas in a broad manner. After completing this school, students take jobs at various places such as schools and hospitals. They also enter the industrial community, with some of them becoming counselors, and others, clinical psychotherapists.

Course requirements for each program are sequenced to begin with essential skills before moving on to the complex skill mastery demanded of medical assistants found in the laboratory, clinical, and administrative areas. Upon successful completion of course study, the student completes the program through a hands-on experience in the medical field (externship). It should be noted that individuals currently employed by medical facilities may qualify to register for the more advanced course offerings.

A Medical Assistant is one of the most versatile of all the allied health professionals. Graduates find positions in physicians’ offices, medical centers, clinics, hospitals, armed services, laboratories and pharmaceutical companies. The program is designed to enable graduates to do both adminis- trative and clinical/laboratory techniques.

Students in the program acquire the knowledge and necessary techniques to prepare patients for examinations and to assist the physician in performing not only routine medical procedures but also electrocardiography, audiometry, urinalysis and hematological tests.

Courses in medical terminology, keyboarding, medical correspondence and medical office man- agement, prepare the student to conduct business and administrative duties.

Medical Transcriptionists understand and use medical terms, appropriate reference materials, word processing equipment and software to transcribe medical reports dictated by physicians and other health care professionals.

Medical transcriptionists work in a variety of settings, including Health Information Departments and ancillary professional departments of hospitals (e.g. radiology, pathology, etc.), clinics, doctors’offices, private transcription businesses and other health care facilities.

This program fulfills the requirements set by State and national agencies for credentialing of the Emergency Medical Technician/Paramedic. Students will become proficient in the art and science of out-of-hospital medicine in conjunction with medical direction. The program stresses mastery in advanced life support skills which will be accomplished in College laboratories, affiliated hospitals and advanced life support ambulances. Competency in theory, knowledge and molding the students’ professional attitude consistent with the expectations of the public and the profession is also stressed.

The respiratory therapy practitioner is an allied health specialist who treats, manages, controls, and cares for patients with deficiencies and abnormalities related to breathing and associated organs. Because their training enables them to perform specific testing techniques used in monitoring, evaluating, and treating their patients, respiratory therapy practitioners are frequently required to exercise considerable independent clinical judgment in the respiratory therapy of patients under the direct or indirect supervision of a physician.

In addition to managing patients, the respiratory care practitioner supervises technicians and junior respiratory care practitioners. Furthermore, the respiratory care practitioner is capable of serving as a technical resource to physicians and to the hospital staff for information on safe and effective methods for administering respiratory care.

The Respiratory Therapy program includes classroom instruction, clinical laboratory, and in-hospital clinical practice. The clinical laboratory provides training and evaluation for skills learned and demonstrated during lecture sessions. The program’s clinical phase, conducted at local hospitals, applies a competency-based educational approach to allow mastery of each skill.
