Cosumnes River College (CRC) is in the early stages of developing a community college Pharmacy Technician Associate Degree Program, the first in the northern California region. The goal is to develop a complete Pharmacy Technician program that combines rigorous classroom instruction with ample hands-on experience for students; links to existing academic programs and support services at the college; engages highly qualified faculty, including those holding doctoral degrees in Pharmacy (Pharm D), and meets the accreditation standards of the American Society of Health- System Pharmacists. Regional employers have already expressed strong interest in hiring students who complete a CRC Pharmacy Technician degree. To better assess potential student interest, CRC asks that you consider providing your name and contact information through the CRC website at: www.crc.losrios.edu/pharmacy so that we may contact you when these courses become available.

The course philosophy is to provide a variety of learning activities which will enable individuals to meet their Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements and to continually improve the quality of the clinical care delivered to patients. In order to keep up with changes within the profession and health care, the content of the four modules that comprise each course is constantly updated. Further innovative changes are also being made to the structure of the courses in order to accommodate the needs of pharmacists for smaller learning activities that either be used as flexible ‘stand alone’ CPD activities or be built into a postgraduate qualification. Current plans are for the content to be organised into three themes: clinical foundations, professional/ clinical skills development and professional focus/service development. It is also envisaged that pharmacists who have credits gained through completion of supplementary and independent prescribing modules will be able to use those credits towards their PgDip.

Pharmacy is the study of medicines and their use. Study of pharmacy is usually as a basis for and on the route to qualification as a pharmacist. Consequently, the pharmacy degree course is vocationally orientated, that is it is focused on the knowledge and skills needs of future pharmacists.
The Master of Pharmacy, abbreviated MPharm, programme is of four years’ duration. After gaining his or her MPharm degree, a pharmacy student must undertake a year’s preregistration training in pharmacy practice, based in a hospital or community pharmacy (or sometimes a combination of the two) before becoming eligible for registration as a pharmacist with the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain (RPSGB) the professional body for pharmacy. Registration is subject to approval by the student’s practice tutor and passing the RPSGB’s registration examination. Most MPharm graduates have no difficulty achieving these requirements, certainly this is the case for Cardiff graduates.

The pharmacist is a person licensed to dispense drugs. In a retail pharmacy, the pharmacist is also involved in explaining the effects and possible side effects of the drugs to customers and in recommending non-prescription drugs for various purposes. In a hospital pharmacy, pharmacists may participate with the attending physician in planning which drugs and dosages would be appropriate for a particular patient. Many job opportunities are now becoming available in this profession in retail pharmacies, in hospital pharmacies, in drug research, and as drug company representatives. Calvin College aims to equip women and men for such careers, preparing them for lives of Christ-centered service.
